
Human Services, Inc. (HSI) announces measures put in place related to COVID-19
To prevent the spread of COVID-19 to older adults, people who have serious underlying medical conditions, our employees, participants and families we serve, Human Services, Inc. is putting the following measures in place.
- Office closure: Human Services, Inc. is open for business however, our offices are closed to the public until further notice in compliance with guidance provided by local, state and federal government officials.
- Contacting HSI for assistance: The public can reach all offices by telephone during our normal business operating hours. For your convenience, immediately below are all office phone numbers. Phones are being answered during normal operating hours. Bartholomew County: (812) 372-8407, Decatur County: (812) 663-8830, Jackson County: (812) 522-8718, Johnson County: (317) 736-0755, Shelby County: (317) 398-3153.
- In-person meetings: All in-person meetings are being handled by phone, email and/or texts until further notice.
The following program procedures have been put in place. These policies will begin immediately and remain in effect until further notice. Any changes or new information regarding procedures or resources available will be uploaded to this page on our agency website as they occur.
- Head Start / Early Head Start classes are currently cancelled until 04/06/2020. Prior to that date we will revisit, and revise as needed. Teachers and Family Advocates are keeping in contact with parents/guardians and assessing what needs can be met and making referrals for needed services.
- In addition, Head Start / Early Head start is regularly posting information on their Facebook page at: “HSI Head Start and Early Head Start” to keep families informed.
- Housing Choice Voucher program has currently suspended face to face appointments. Housing applications are being processed by mail and/or e-mail. Housing inspections will be temporarily postponed for recertifications’. Please rest assured that we are putting new procedures in place to continue services. If you need to reach someone by telephone, please call the office number for the county that you reside in. The receptionist will forward your message to the appropriate person and you will receive a return phone call.
- Energy Assistance Program (EAP). Mail-in application packets continue to be available. Applicants are being directed to mail applications to the offices. At this time, applications cannot be dropped off in person. Any applicant that needs postage to submit application will be mailed an addressed, postage paid envelope.
- Food Pantries in Shelby and Decatur Counties are initiating curb-side pick-up for food for all qualifying households. Pick-up is available during regularly scheduled food pantry hours. As COVID-19 continues to esculate in number of positive cases, our food pantry are starting to implement food distribution days of one (1) time per month at which time you should expect to receive enough food product to last approximately two (2) weeks. We will post the updated schedule later on this week. The is being done for the safety and well-being for all persons involved. Pantry hours this week remain as below.
- Shelby County Food Pantry hours: Wednesday 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Decatur County Food Pantry hours: Thursday 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Infant Care Pantry Program in Johnson and Shelby Counties is operating by scheduled pick-up only.
- Shelby County: Pick-ups available on Tuesday’s. Call (317) 398-3153 in advance to schedule a pick-up time.
- Johnson County: Pick-ups available on Wednesday’s. Call (317) 736-0755 in advance to schedule a pick-up time.
- Weekend Warriors program in Jackson County is issuing additional food to students to lessen the number of visits and to assist while school is closed. Call office at (812) 522-8718 for more information.
- Coaching Programs. Coaches will be communicating with participants to assist with barriers. Visits will be conducted over the phone until further notice.
- Horizon House Homeless Shelter is open and operating. Precautions are being taken and social distancing has been put in place. If you need to reach the shelter, they can be reached at (812) 799-1062.
- WIC is currently doing all appointments by telephone and issuing benefits remotely. If a new card, new folder, or a shopping list is needed, it will be mailed to you. If you need a breast pump, we can make arrangements to meet you and deliver curbside. If you need breastfeeding assistance, please call Tera at (765) 561-9553. - There are social media rumors about changes in cards and benefits, which is false information. WIC benefits and cards will remain the same. If you have any questions about what you see or hear, please call the offices, and we will be happy to help.
